We conducted the first DNA barcoding workshop with Belizean High School students utilizing predatory fish species from the region. Each student received one fish collected during the Carrie Bow Biocode trip, removed the gut, extracted the gut content, split the contents into 4 separate DNA extractions, amplified the COI gene, and ran it on a gel electrophoresis to see if the PCR was successful. The students were very successful and received some good high quality DNA sequence for their efforts. Next year we hope to expand the class and the number of samples we are working with.
